In 2024, the UK bus and coach market experienced a significant resurgence, achieving a remarkable 70.1% growth in registrations, totaling 8,390 vehicles. This performance is the best since 2008, propelling the UK to become the largest bus market in Europe. The zero-emission segment also saw impressive growth, with registrations increasing by 35.5% as demand surged for electric and hydrogen buses. Despite a decline in Scotland, registrations in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland all reported substantial increases, buoyed by government funding and a wider offering of bus models, especially in the zero-emission category.
Two years of growth and a 16-year high have cemented the recovery of Britain's bus sector, with passenger numbers continuing to rise alongside increasing deliveries of new zero-emission buses.
2024 saw robust demand across all segments, with deliveries of minibuses more than doubling, up 102.5% to 4,816 registrations, and accounting for 57.4% of the overall market.
This represented a 35.5% increase in demand for zero-emission buses, driven in part by increased model availability, with operators able to choose from 17 options.
SMMT notes that 2024 saw a 70.1% increase in bus registrations, marking the best annual performance since 2008, becoming the largest overall European bus market.
