Ugandan activist freed by Tanzania, 'indications of torture' DW 05/23/2025
Briefly

Agather Atuhaire, a Ugandan lawyer and activist, was released by Tanzanian authorities after being detained while trying to attend a treason trial for opposition leader Tundu Lissu. Rights group Agora Discourse confirmed her release, indicating she had been abandoned at the border. Her fellow activist, Kenyan Boniface Mwangi, also faced similar conditions of torture during his detention. Both activists reported severe mistreatment, with Mwangi sharing that they were targeted under orders from a state security agent. There has been no official comment from Tanzanian officials regarding their treatment.
Agather is under the care of family and friends, having been found abandoned at the border by Tanzanian authorities.
Mwangi recalled, 'We were both treated worse than dogs, chained, blindfolded and underwent a very gruesome torture.'
