Two elderly women have died after a stolen BMW being pursued by police crashed into a care home in Sunderland. The collision led to evacuations and structural damage. Northumbria Police reported that a woman in her 90s and another in her 80s passed away. Eight other residents sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two men, aged 21, were re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter after initially being detained for vehicle theft and dangerous driving. The investigation will also assess the impact of the crash on the victims' deaths.
Sadly, two care home residents a woman in her 90s and a woman in her 80s passed away yesterday. The next of kin for both women have been notified and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The BMW crashed into the care home on Wednesday. Eight other residents were taken to hospital in the aftermath of the crash. Only one remained in hospital on Friday.
Following the police pursuit, a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Chief Superintendent Mark Hall expressed deep sadness over the incident.
Two 21-year-olds who had previously been questioned were re-arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the deaths. They remain in police custody.
