Tortured over a tweet: how the war between Kenya's Gen Z and their president has moved online
Briefly

Billy Mwangi, a 24-year-old student from Embu, was abducted on December 22, 2024, likely due to his political posts on social media. Alongside four others, he endured 15 days of torture, with harrowing conditions where captives were beaten and humiliated. His viral AI-generated image of President Ruto in a coffin is believed to have triggered the abduction, echoing the dangers faced by those who critique the government in Kenya. Mwangi's release on January 6 left him traumatized and aware that the risk of political expression can have dire consequences.
"I was tortured and beaten up. It was too much, life there wasn't good," says Mwangi, recounting the ordeal he faced during his abduction.
"I used to see stories on abductions on TV but I never thought it would be something that would happen to me," reflects Mwangi on his unexpected experience.
Mwangi believes he was abducted because he had posted an AI-generated picture of President William Ruto in a coffin, which went viral on social media.
Bernard Kavuli, another abductee, described the captives as "stripped naked, handcuffed and beaten daily, sometimes with electric cables," illustrating the brutal conditions of their captivity.
