Three police officers and two paramedics hit by van at scene of crash

"Five emergency service workers have been injured after they were hit by a van while they were helping a member of the public. Three off-duty officers and two paramedics were hurt in the collision, which happened on an A road in Essex early this morning. The emergency staff were assisting a Nissan X-Trail that had crashed at around 12.15am on the A130 between the Rayleigh Spur and Sadlers Farm roundabouts. The road was closed while the incident was cleared. It has now fully reopened."

"While they were helping at the scene, a second crash occurred involving a white Ford Transit van. A paramedic and police officer were seriously injured and are still in hospital. The other three were also injured and taken to hospital."

"Three men in their 20s and 30s have been arrested. They remain in custody while an investigation takes place. A 29-year-old man from Westcliff has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a Class B or Class C drug and being in charge of a vehicle while unfit through drink or drugs. A 39-year-old man from Canvey has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. A 23-year-old man from Canvey has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle and driving while unfit through drink or drugs."
