The Heighington station, possibly the world's first railway station, was confirmed operational from 1827, surpassing Liverpool Road station previously thought to be the oldest.
Historic England upgraded Heighington station's listing from Grade II to Grade II*, designating it as particularly important, a classification held by only 5.8% of listed buildings.
Campaigners are rallying to save Heighington station, which has now been added to the 2024 Heritage at Risk Register due to neglect and decay.
