Parts of Britain are experiencing a heatwave with temperatures reaching 36°C. Many are attempting DIY hacks to cool their homes, particularly through creative use of electric fans. Experts caution against using water or ice with fans as it poses serious safety risks. Frozen bottles and towels can create condensation and electrical hazards, leading to potential electric shocks. These methods also fail to provide substantial cooling, with the added weight risking damage to fan motors. Overall, the hacks are labeled as both dangerous and ineffective.
'Water and electricity don't mix,' said Luke Osborne, technical director at Electrical Safety First. 'Anything that is frozen will eventually melt and will potentially drench your fan in water.'
'This mindless 'hack' is not only dangerous but ineffective too,' he explained. 'The frozen bottles of water will inevitably melt, creating condensation on the outside of the bottle.'
'You're also adding weight to your fan that it's not designed to handle, which may put unnecessary stress on your fan's motor and risk damaging your device.'
'Much like other ineffective hacks, a frozen towel won't offer enough energy to significantly cool the air.'
