Sir Keir Starmer has committed to advocating for the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, Egypt’s most prominent political prisoner. Amidst escalating diplomatic tensions, foreign officials have highlighted his unjust detention, which began in 2019. His mother, Laila Soueif, has embarked on an extensive hunger strike, highlighting the personal toll of this political crisis. Mr Abd el-Fattah’s arbitrary detention and the UN's classification of it as unlawful reflect broader issues of repression under President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi's regime. As the situation worsens, there's increasing urgency for action to secure Mr Abd el-Fattah's freedom and address human rights abuses in Egypt.
The UN working group on arbitrary detention found last month that Abd el-Fattah's detention was unlawful, violating his right to free expression and fair trial.
As of Tuesday, Laila Soueif had not eaten for 261 days to demand her son's release, symbolizing the deep personal impact of his unjust detention.
