Teachers in the UK are reporting a worrying increase in misogyny and racism among students, linked to social media and figures like Donald Trump and Andrew Tate. A survey by NASUWT indicates that the majority see social media as a leading cause of student misbehavior, with negative influences manifesting in bullying and disrespectful attitudes, especially toward female staff. Teachers express frustration over parental neglect of school rules. The issue extends to the content students consume, which diminishes attention spans and promotes a culture of disregard for authority. Teachers call for a comprehensive strategy to address these behavioral concerns beyond just limiting mobile phone access.
A lot of the students are influenced by Tate and Trump, they spout racist, homophobic, transphobic and sexist comments in every conversation and don't believe there will be consequences.
Two in three teachers tell us that social media is now a critical factor contributing to bullying and poor pupil behaviour.
Pupils watch violent and extreme pornographic material. Their attention spans have dropped. They read lots of fake news and sensationalised stories that make them feel empowered and that they know better than the teacher.
We now need a plan to tackle what has become a critical issue in schools, as simply restricting mobile phone access isn't sufficient.
