""If you're heading out to a Christmas party or an evening walk near water, plan your route carefully, stick to well-lit areas and stay away from the edge," said assistant commissioner Pam Oparoacha. "If you see someone else in difficulty, please don't enter the water yourself. Call 999 and try to throw them something that floats.""
""Anthony and I joined Addington fire station around the same time, and he quickly became not only a valued colleague but a close friend. His loss had a devastating impact on all of us. "Anthony will always remain in our hearts. We continue his legacy by educating the public and working to prevent future tragedies. The best way we can remember him is by keeping others safe.""
The London Fire Brigade has responded to more than 670 water-related incidents this year, more than double the number recorded five years ago. There were 49 water-related callouts last December, making it the busiest month outside of summer, and November 2025 recorded 46 incidents, mostly involving people in difficulty in the water or trapped in mud. The brigade urged people to take precautions when walking near waterways after dark, plan routes carefully, stick to well-lit areas and stay away from edges. People are advised not to enter the water to rescue others, to call 999 and to try to throw something that floats. The 2019 drowning of firefighter Anthony Knott, found weeks after going missing near a flooded river, is cited as underscoring the warning, and colleagues say they continue his legacy by educating the public and preventing future tragedies.
