Syria ends operation against al-Assad loyalists after days of fighting

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 1,130 casualties in recent clashes following an attack by Alawite gunmen on a police patrol. This violence marks a severe surge in fighting since the official end of the civil war. The caretaker government faces challenges in asserting authority amidst ongoing violent confrontations between government supporters and loyalists of ousted president Bashar al-Assad. Colonel Hassan Abdel-Ghani emphasized a firm stance against remnants of the old regime, while security forces continue efforts to root out loyalists involved in the current insurgency.

1,130 people were killed in the clashes, including 830 civilians. Security forces continue searching for sleeper cells and remaining former government loyalists.

The announcement comes despite reports of ongoing violent clashes in Baniyas, indicating the government's difficulty in maintaining control post-civil war.
