Swedish Migration Agency tightens up security checks for citizenship
Briefly

Sweden's Migration Agency has initiated stricter security checks for citizenship, requiring in-person identity verification for applicants. This change, prompted by government directives, seeks to prevent individuals posing security risks from gaining citizenship. Applicants must provide detailed personal information, including career and travel history. Amid rising concerns about security, the government has hinted at slowing citizenship approvals until new regulations, including extended residency requirements and civics tests, are implemented. The new rules aim to bolster Sweden's security framework and establish a more rigorous citizenship process.
For us it is extremely important that people who pose a threat to Sweden can't get citizenship, Migration Agency project lead Oskar Ekblad wrote.
We must never compromise when it comes to Swedish security and hand out citizenship on the wrong grounds, said Migration Minister Johan Forssell at the time.
There are a number of new rules for citizenship in the works, including an extension to the residency requirement from five to eight years, as well as a civics test and self-sufficiency requirement.
Experts had previously guessed that security checks would be tightened as a pretext of slowing down the awarding of new citizenships until stricter rules are in place.
