HMP Manchester, known as Strangeways, has transitioned to emergency measures after a severe decline in safety and hygiene standards was revealed by inspectors.
Chief Inspector Charlie Taylor noted that the levels of illicit drugs present in HMP Manchester are catastrophic and have drastically undermined safety within the facility.
Despite high rates of serious assaults and a significant percentage of inmates testing positive for drugs, the prison's security systems, including CCTV, are failing.
The prison's emergency situation is attributed to a mix of ‘broken’ infrastructure, including delayed repairs on critical security measures, and an influx of organized crime.
