During a Glasgow conference, Sir Keir Starmer stressed the importance of doing more for defense and security, acknowledging the reality of instability in Europe. He announced plans for the UK to work towards spending 2.5% of GDP on defense. Furthermore, Starmer highlighted the commitment to support Ukraine, advocating for their long-term security and readiness to contribute peacekeeping forces post-conflict.
Starmer said, "Instability in Europe always washes up on our shores. And this is a generational moment. I've been saying for some time that we Europeans - including the United Kingdom - have to do more for our defence and security. The US is right about that."
Starmer added, "As we enter a new phase in this conflict, we must now deepen our solidarity even further. There can be no discussion about Ukraine without Ukraine. And the people of Ukraine must have long-term security."
