A recent heatwave is causing disruptions to rail services in southern Britain, specifically leading to speed restrictions on main lines out of London. Passengers traveling west from Paddington and south on the Brighton mainline are warned of potential delays and cancellations, as the soaring temperatures create unsafe conditions on the tracks. With temperatures exceeding 30°C, track conditions may reach up to 50°C, which increases the risk of rail failure. Restrictions are expected to remain in effect, potentially extending due to the continued heat.
Network Rail stated, 'With temperatures set to soar as forecast by the Met Office, speed restrictions have to be imposed across large parts of the network to ensure everyone's safety.'
