South Wales Police to use facial recognition cameras across Cardiff
Briefly

South Wales Police intends to deploy live facial recognition cameras during the Six Nations rugby internationals in Cardiff to identify individuals on a watchlist in real-time. Though police assert the aim is to enhance safety for visitors, critics argue this initiative represents a dangerous escalation in surveillance, denouncing it as a move towards an Orwellian state. The technology allows quick identification of wanted individuals within large crowds without recording footage, but concerns about privacy and the potential for widespread surveillance have been raised.
"The expansion of facial recognition cameras around the city centre really enhances our ability to keep visitors safe from harm," said Trudi Meyrick, Assistant Chief Constable.
"Embedding facial recognition surveillance in a city-wide CCTV network represents a shocking expansion of police surveillance, and turns Cardiff into an Orwellian zone of biometric surveillance," said Madeleine Stone.
