Recent arrests of South Sudan's petroleum minister, Puot Kang Chol, and lieutenant general Gabriel Doup Lam, have raised fears of a coup targeting Vice President Riek Machar's faction. Following the arrests, which involved the National Security Service, concerns were voiced over potential violations of the 2018 power-sharing agreement. This agreement helped to end five years of civil war. The SSPDF has accused Lam of collaborating with rebels from the Nuer community in Upper Nile state, amidst rising tensions and violence in the region, exacerbating the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
The operation was conducted by personnel identified as members of the National Security Service. This act puts the entire agreement at risk, said Machar's spokesperson.
The SSPDF have accused General Duop Lam and his troops of working with rebels in Upper Nile state, predominantly from the same ethnic Nuer community.
