Snow warning for London as UK braces for wintry start to 2026
"A snow and ice warning has been issued for London as the UK faces an extremely chilly start to the new year. The yellow warning is in place between midnight and noon on Friday, January 2, covering a large swathe of England and Wales, from the capital and Kent up to Chester and Greater Manchester. The Met Office issued the alert on Wednesday morning as temperatures plunge across the UK."
"It could see some areas blanketed in snow up to 5cm deep, especially on higher ground in parts of North Wales and north-west England. Separate yellow warnings are also in place for Northern Ireland between midnight and 10am on Friday, and in northern Scotland between 6am on New Year's Day and the end of Friday. The chilly conditions are expect to have an impact on transport, with people urged to prepare for longer journey times by road, bus and train services."
"The Met Office has also warned of injuries due to slips and falls on icy surfaces, which will develop quickly as sleet and snow clears. Yellow cold health alerts have already been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for London and the East, South East and South West of England, as well as the East and West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber. The cold snap comes as millions of household energy bills are to rise."
