Scientists criticise cut in UK funding for global vaccination group
Briefly

The UK has reduced its financial commitment to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) by 24%, resulting in adverse consequences for child vaccination programs in developing nations. Experts warn that this decision will endanger thousands of children's lives, as the new funding is lower than previously pledged. Despite a strong initial commitment, the actual support has been decreased significantly when accounting for inflation, causing concern among vaccine scientists about the ramifications for global health initiatives and the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.
Many thousands of children who could have lived will instead die; it’s hugely disappointing to see the UK government backsliding rather than driving progress on global poverty.
While the £1.25bn sum would immunise 72 million children and prevent 1.1m deaths, this was 400,000 fewer lives than would have been the case under previous funding.
