Schizophrenic bus stop killer held indefinitely
"The court has heard a man with a severe mental illness was known to services and assessed by consultant psychiatrists as psychologically stable and safe for the community."
"She was a wife, mother and grandmother, stabbed to death by a complete stranger on a busy main road in north London."
"Her absence has left silence that nothing can fill."
A 24-year-old man with paranoid schizophrenia fatally stabbed a 66-year-old woman, Anita Mukhey, 18 times at about midday at a north London bus stop in May 2024. The attacker walked away while passers-by rushed to help the victim. The man had been living in a residential home for people with mental health problems and had been consuming gory online videos. He purchased a hunting knife online that was delivered to his home about an hour before the attack, and the killing mirrored violence he had watched. A judge imposed a hospital order with a restriction order, allowing indefinite detention. The victim's family said psychiatrists had assessed him as psychologically stable despite escalating behaviour.
