Rwandan authorities have taken action following reports from citizens stranded in Southeast Asia, particularly Myanmar and Laos, lured by job scams. Influencer Richard Kwizera highlighted their plight on social media, leading to the repatriation of ten individuals. Many Rwandans fall victim to fraudsters promising job opportunities abroad, often resulting in human trafficking and forced labor. The Rwandan government has expressed concern and is working with international organizations to address illegal recruitment and assist its nationals. While ten have been returned, at least five more remain stranded and unable to communicate freely.
There are dozens of Rwandan nationals trafficked to Southeast Asian countries, especially Myanmar and Laos who are appealing to the Rwandan government to help facilitate their return home.
The Government working with IOM [International Organization for Migration], has this past week repatriated 10 victims of trafficking from Myanmar.
Young people from countries in East Africa who travel to Asia and the Middle East for jobs often find themselves being forced into commercial sex work and other dangerous occupations.
Fraudsters who offer jobs and other opportunities abroad and solicit money from unsuspecting people are becoming increasingly active.
