Royal train to be retired as King Charles seeks to modernise monarchy
Briefly

King Charles's initiative to modernize the monarchy has led to the decision to decommission the historic royal train, used since 1840, due to high maintenance costs. The train reflects a significant aspect of royal heritage but needs expensive updates for modern railway use. To minimize expenditures, the monarchy will instead utilize two new fuel-efficient helicopters. Financial reports show that the sovereign grant will maintain at 86.3 million for another year before increasing significantly, reflecting the monarchy's adjustment to contemporary fiscal realities and ongoing refurbishment costs for Buckingham Palace.
The royal train has been part of national life for many decades, loved and cared for by all those involved. But in moving forward we must not be bound by the past.
The grant will remain at 86.3m for a fourth consecutive year but will increase to 132m annually between 2025 and 2027, partly due to offshore windfarm profits.
