Rogue roofer who ran over and killed woman on golf course in police chase jailed
"John McDonald, 52, was sentenced after his van struck 62-year-old Suzanne Cherry at Aston Wood Golf Club in Shenstone, Staffordshire, last April. Ms Cherry was playing golf with her husband, Clint Harrison, and was searching for her ball near a stream when McDonald's vehicle ploughed into her. She sustained multiple catastrophic injuries and died in hospital on 15 April, the day before her 63rd birthday."
"McDonald's van, which had already damaged at least five other vehicles, reached speeds of 70mph in 30mph zones, drove on the wrong side of the road, and mounted pavements. During the 12-minute chase, he rammed a police car at least eight times before turning onto the golf course. Collision investigators stated the van was travelling at 41mph just five seconds before its airbags deployed."
John McDonald, 52, drove a van that struck 62-year-old Suzanne Cherry at Aston Wood Golf Club in Shenstone, causing catastrophic injuries that led to her death on 15 April. Ms Cherry was searching for a golf ball near a stream while playing with her husband when the vehicle ploughed into her. The van had been involved in a 12-minute police pursuit, reaching speeds of 70mph in 30mph zones, mounting pavements and ramming a police car multiple times. Investigators found the van was travelling at 41mph five seconds before airbag deployment and that McDonald braked only seconds before impact. McDonald and two passengers fled the scene; all three admitted conspiracy to commit fraud related to roofing work. Worcester Crown Court sentenced John McDonald to 13-and-a-half years in prison.
