The Independent highlights pressing social issues, detailing a case where a 73-year-old resident, Myra Hunter, and her elderly neighbors at Citadel Court, Plymouth, faced isolation due to a broken lift for nine weeks. The lift's absence was particularly challenging for residents in the 80s and 90s, who could not use the stairs. Sanctuary Housing issued an apology, citing challenges in obtaining necessary parts for repairs. Hunter likened the distress of being stuck at home to conditions worse than the Covid lockdown, emphasizing the necessity of functional communal amenities for the elderly.
Describing the situation in recent months as worse than the Covid lockdown, Ms Hunter said: To stay in because you can't get down the stairs from your apartment, it's really not good.
Sanctuary Housing, which runs the block of 38 flats, apologized for the disruption in a statement and blamed the delay in fixing the lift on difficulties sourcing the specialist parts.
