Mr. Kelly confirmed he will not pursue the Fine Gael nomination for Áras, citing a blend of personal contentment and disappointment in missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. After reflecting on his happiness and responsibilities, he decided to continue his work in Europe, where he received substantial support in previous elections. Despite previous interest, he faced uncertainty and recognized the limited power of the ceremonial role of head of state, ultimately choosing to sustain his current trajectory.
Mr Kelly expressed disappointment over his decision not to run for his party's candidate, emphasizing that such an opportunity comes along only once in a lifetime. However, he has ultimately decided to continue his responsibilities in Europe.
Reflecting on his decision process, Mr Kelly noted, 'I was thinking seriously about it and some days I would say yes, and other days I would say no.' Ultimately, he opted to continue his current work in the European context.
He acknowledged the role of head of state as the highest political honor in Ireland but felt it to be largely ceremonial, stating, 'You don't have that much power and influence, even though you can dress it up whatever you like.'
Mr Kelly declared, 'I asked myself one question. I said, 'Am I happy what I'm doing with the moment?' And I said, 'I am.' Would I be happier spending seven years in the Áras?” He chose to remain in his current role.
