Readers reply: should speed cameras be hidden?
"What's the point of having speed limits if camera-warning signs and apps allow drivers to slow down in advance then just continue speeding? Maybe the UK government in its new consultations on road safety should add the question of hiding speed cameras to their list of concerns. I'm a driver, but also a pedestrian and cyclist and get fed up with seeing cars zooming down local roads at way more than 20 or 30mph. There are flashing lights that tell drivers"
"EGriff I've an idea why don't the authorities dig lots of holes in the road to encourage drivers to slow down (the encouragement being avoidance of severe and expensive damage to tyres, wheels and suspension). We could call them potholes. Oh hang on DocLobster1960 Speeding is antisocial behaviour, so why not make the people who do it pay into the coffers for the good of society?"
Camera-warning signs and apps cause drivers to decelerate only briefly before accelerating again, reducing the deterrent effect of speed limits. Hiding speed cameras would increase the chance of catching persistent speeders and could improve compliance on 20mph and 30mph local roads. Flashing speed displays inform drivers of their speed but do not carry penalties at those points, limiting enforcement effectiveness. Proposed measures include concealed cameras, stricter penalties requiring speeders to contribute fines to local funds, and wider use of speed awareness training. Experience shows speed awareness courses can change behaviour, and past government choices have determined camera visibility.
