Ahmed Ramadan Mohamad Ebid, a 42-year-old Egyptian national, was arrested by the National Crime Agency in London for orchestrating the smuggling of thousands of migrants from North Africa to Europe. He was involved in organizing dangerous boat journeys from Libya and profited over £12 million from smuggling operations, charging migrants around £3,200 each. Despite claiming to be a minor player in the crime network, the evidence presented in court demonstrated his significant role, leading to a 25-year prison sentence due to his managerial position in the organized crime group.
Ebid was part of a crime network who preyed upon the desperation of migrants to ship them across the Mediterranean in death trap boats. The cruel nature of his business was demonstrated by the callous way he spoke of throwing migrants into the sea if they didn't follow his rules. To him they were just a source of profit.
Ebid claimed to be a low-ranking member of the network, but evidence showed he was a key figure. The judge described him as having held a significant managerial role within an organised crime group.
