Number of websites selling child abuse images double in 12 months
"Kerry Smith, chief executive of the IWF, stated, 'It is clear criminals are exploiting systemic failures and are finding it far too easy to reap huge profits from children's sexual exploitation. At every stage, we need to disrupt this system.'"
"'We need mandatory measures on financial services to proactively detect, take down and report digital payment links for the sale of images and videos of child sexual abuse,' Smith emphasized."
"'The number of children who reported being victims of so-called sextortion, where blackmailers trick or force them into providing graphic images, also more than doubled last year,' noted Jess Phillips."
The Internet Watch Foundation reported a significant increase in commercial websites involved in child sexual abuse, with 15,031 sites identified in 2025, up from 7,028. The report also noted 317,101 images of child abuse were marked digitally to prevent further dissemination. Approximately 16% of these sites were disguised as legitimate content. The IWF calls for mandatory measures for financial services to detect and report payment links related to these images. The rise in sextortion cases among children has also been alarming, indicating a growing online threat.
