NSO Group must pay Meta $168M in WhatsApp spy case
Briefly

A California jury awarded Meta over $167 million in damages against NSO Group, which exploited a WhatsApp vulnerability to deploy Pegasus spyware on user devices. Discovered in May 2019, the zero-day flaw allowed attackers to install malware via a phone call, accessing sensitive data without any user action. The intrusion affected around 1,400 WhatsApp accounts before the issue was quickly patched. Following the incident, Meta initiated legal action against NSO, culminating in a significant court ruling. Meta aims to ensure transparency by sharing court deposition transcripts with the public.
In an extra twist of the knife, the company formerly known as Facebook is sharing transcripts of NSO executives' court depositions on its PR website, "so that these records are available to researchers and journalists studying these threats and working to protect the public."
The mega-corp added, "We intend to add official court transcripts once they become available," signaling their commitment to transparency and accountability in protecting user data.
