Notting Hill Carnival sees drop in serious violence despite Met Police making 528 arrests

Notting Hill Carnival attracted over a million attendees across two days while experiencing fewer incidents of serious violence than in past years. Police made 200 arrests on Sunday and 328 on Monday, totalling 528 arrests. Facial recognition technology, using drones able to identify individuals up to 80m away, contributed to 61 arrests. Reported incidents included four stabbing or slashing reports without life-threatening injuries. Arrests comprised many drug offences, weapons possessions, sexual offences and assaults on officers, with some officers injured. Pre-event operations led to further arrests and seizures of firearms and knives.
The Met Police has revealed that there were fewer incidents of serious violence at Notting Hill Carnival compared to previous years. There were 200 arrests on Sunday and 328 on Monday, with facial recognition software leading to 61 arrests. The technology uses drones that can identify individuals from up to 80m (260ft) away, which then feed images to officers. The Met Police said its officers responded to four reports of stabbing or slashing incidents, none of which led to life-threatening injuries.
There were 167 arrests for drugs offences, 50 for possession of an offensive weapon, 21 for sexual offences, four for violence with injury and 49 for other violence. The Met Police said there were 55 arrests for assaults on officers, with one officer taken to hospital with a broken nose and another for a serious bite to the hand.
