Norway and the UK vow to beef up subsea security
Briefly

During a visit to northern Norway, UK Defence Minister John Healey and Norway's Defence Minister Tore Sandvik announced plans to enhance cooperation in protecting subsea infrastructure. Sandvik emphasized the risk posed by Russian military capabilities targeting Western infrastructures. Norway, a key gas supplier to Britain, underlined the significance of safeguarding its connections, particularly after recent incidents involving damage to telecoms and electricity cables. Healy highlighted the broader threat of Russian aggression beyond Ukraine, reiterating the need for a unified defense strategy in light of these challenges.
Russia has for many years maintained and developed its military capacity that can strike Western deep-water infrastructure. We have to expect that this kind of capacity can be used against Norwegian infrastructure in the event of heightened tensions or conflict.
We are now sending a very clear message to anyone thinking of sabotaging our subsea infrastructure: 'We will see you.'
