The Portugal-flagged container ship Solong has docked in Aberdeen after a tug-assisted journey to assess damage from its recent collision with the US tanker MV Stena Immaculate. The incident occurred on March 10, leading to one sailor missing, presumed dead, and the captain charged with gross negligence manslaughter. Environmental concerns arose from nurdles washing ashore, but authorities report low toxicity. Investigations into the collision continue, with the ship set for a thorough evaluation by specialists in Aberdeen.
Salvage of the Solong has progressed to enable its relocation to the Port of Aberdeen for safe berthing, said chief coastguard Paddy O'Callaghan.
Environmental damage from the collision has been less than first thought, though thousands of pellets used in plastics production, known as nurdles, from the ruptured containers on the Solong have begun washing up on beaches in the east of England.
