In response to the November 2023 riots in Dublin, significant resources are being allocated to the Gardaí to enhance public order capabilities. Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan announced that nearly €9 million will be spent on new equipment, including two water cannon vehicles from the PSNI. Additional funds cover body armor and incapacitant sprays for officers. Despite an increase in Garda numbers, opposition parties argue that Gardaí per capita are now lower than in 2005. The Minister is also exploring recruiting local PSNI officers to help bolster the force's size.
Almost €9m has been provided for new and enhanced public-order equipment since the riots, including two water-cannon vehicles bought from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) at a cost of €1m each.
We are at a stage where we are trying to recruit as many members into An Garda Síochána as we can, Mr O'Callaghan told the Dáil.
