Mother of Ricky Reel haunted' by nightmares over Met Police spying
"The Metropolitan Police's covert Special Demonstration Squad spied on relatives who started a peaceful campaign called Justice for Ricky Reel in the belief he'd been murdered. David Hagen an officer known as HN81 gathered information about them and their supporters as they travelled nationwide trying to expose apparent failings in the original investigation. On one occasion, Hagen drove Mr Reel's mother Sukhdev from a McDonald's in Stratford back to the family home an address she wanted to keep private."
"Every time I think of Hagen recently, I remember Sarah Everard who was tricked by Met officer Wayne Couzens to get into his car and killed in 2021. When I go to bed at night, I see eyes following me everywhere and a hand on my throat. I am choking. I'm screaming in my sleep and people are waking me up."
Ricky Reel, 20, drowned in the Thames a week after a racist attack in Kingston-upon-Thames in October 1997; no one was arrested or charged. Relatives launched a peaceful campaign called Justice for Ricky Reel, believing he had been murdered. The Metropolitan Police's Special Demonstration Squad covertly spied on campaigners and gathered information as they travelled nationwide. An undercover officer known as David Hagen drove Ricky's mother Sukhdev from a McDonald's back to her private home. Sukhdev Reel testified at the Undercover Police Inquiry and describes ongoing nightmares, choking sensations and severe distress linked to the surveillance, which has been called wholly indefensible.
