More than 480 civilians killed in Sudan's North Darfur over two weeks: UN
Briefly

In North Darfur, Sudan, tremendous violence has led to the reported deaths of over 480 civilians within a two-week span this month, with the UN fearing the true number is higher. Ethnically motivated attacks and rampant sexual violence have characterized the conflict, which escalated after fighting broke out on April 15, 2023, between Sudan's army and paramilitary RSF forces. The UN’s human rights chief described the suffering of the Sudanese people as unfathomable, highlighting a horrific attack in the Zamzam displacement camp in which at least 210 civilians were killed.
The suffering of the Sudanese people is hard to imagine, harder to comprehend and simply impossible to accept, said UN rights chief Volker Turk.
The rising number of civilian casualties and the widespread reports of sexual violence are horrifying, said Turk, emphasizing the grim nature of the conflict.
North Darfur has become a key battleground in the war between Sudan's army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leading to a humanitarian crisis.
Tens of thousands have been killed in the war, which has triggered what the UN describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
