More rescuers join search for trapped workers in India's tunnel collapse
Briefly

Rescue efforts continue for the seventh consecutive day following a tunnel collapse in southern India, triggered by an unexpected inflow of water and soil. Heavy machinery, including boring machines and plasma cutters, has been deployed to expedite the search for several workers still trapped within the debris in Nagarkurnool, Telangana. While 42 workers escaped initially, communication with those trapped has been unsuccessful. Authorities believe the ventilation system has provided necessary oxygen. Officials expect the operation to conclude within days, with tunnel work projected to resume in a couple of months.
More heavy equipment has been deployed to hasten the search as India's South Central Railway announced on Friday that its rescue team had joined the mission to locate the trapped workers.
State Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao told reporters earlier this week that 42 workers swam to safety shortly after the collapse, adding that rescuers had called out to trapped workers through the rubble but had not received any response.
