Janice Nix, 67, was found guilty of the manslaughter of her stepdaughter, Andrea Bernard, for forcing her into a boiling bath in Thornton Heath in 1978. Andrea died nearly six weeks after being taken to hospital with burns covering about 50% of her body. Her death was treated as an accident until 2022, when Andrea’s older brother Desmond Bernard reported a different account to police. Nix initially claimed Andrea had taken a bath herself and later complained of itchy legs before fainting. Nix was arrested on 18 February 2025 after arriving on a flight from Antigua and was charged the same day. She denied manslaughter and cruelty to a child and was remanded in custody for sentencing.
