Michelle Mone-linked PPE firm liquidated and unlikely to repay 148m
"The department's debt is very large indeed and it is a debt which has been incurred through the supply of defective equipment at a time of national crisis."
"questions of how this debt may be recovered"
"hard-earned taxpayer money paid to rogue operators like PPE Medpro"
"During the pandemic, when the whole country was making huge sacrifices, separated from family and loved ones, PPE Medpro supplied defective PPE and unfairly profited."
PPE Medpro, a consortium run by Douglas Barrowman, was placed into liquidation after a High Court found the firm breached a contract to supply 25 million surgical gowns during the Covid pandemic. The firm filed for administration in September, one day before a court order to pay £148m. HM Revenue & Customs is separately owed £39m in tax. Administrators reported about £600,000 available to unsecured creditors, making recovery unlikely for the Department of Health and Social Care. Judge Sebastian Prentis described the department's debt as very large and noted questions over how it may be recovered. Health Secretary Wes Streeting vowed to pursue repayment of taxpayer funds.
