The Cheshire Police have broadened their investigation at Countess of Chester Hospital regarding nurse Lucy Letby, who has been convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill seven others. Authorities are now exploring potential gross negligence manslaughter related to the hospital's practices during the incidents. Senior detective Paul Hughes emphasized this addition focuses on individual negligence distinct from the corporate manslaughter angles of the inquiry. Meanwhile, an international panel of experts has weighed in, suggesting natural causes contributed to the alleged harm, questioning Letby's responsibility.
"As our enquiries have continued, the scope of the investigation has now widened to also include gross negligence manslaughter," said Det Supt Paul Hughes.
"This is a separate offence to corporate manslaughter and focuses on the grossly negligent action or inaction of individuals," advised Det Supt Hughes.
"Our priority is to maintain the integrity of our ongoing investigations and to support the many families who are at the heart of these," stated the senior detective.
"In all cases death or injury were due to natural causes or just bad medical care," remarked Dr. Shoo Lee, chairman of an international panel of specialists.
