Man jailed over murder 'for packet of cornflakes'
"Prosecuting, Jane Bickerstaff KC said "there had been no need to use any violence at all. "He could have just snatched that bag from Mr Mackey's hand," she told the court. Instead, Augustine used "an astonishing level of gratuitous violence", she said, which was "wholly unnecessary and, as witnessed observed, carried out in extreme anger." The judge agreed, deciding the killing did not result from an attempt to steal the bag but from Augustine's rage."
"An Old Bailey judge decided Peter Augustine, 59, lost his temper during an attempt to steal John Mackey's bag outside a Co-op store in Manor House, north London, on 6 May. Mr Mackey, who lived in Finsbury Park but was originally from Ireland, died in hospital two days after the attack. Sentencing Augustine to life with a minimum term of 23 years, Mrs Justice Whitehouse said he had "killed this kind, generous gentleman for a packet of cornflakes"."
An 87-year-old man, John Mackey, was followed after collecting shopping and attacked outside a Co-op in Manor House. The attacker, 59-year-old Peter Augustine, crossed a busy road, tracked the pensioner for 15 minutes and assaulted him in a quiet location. Witnesses said Augustine shouted "give me the bag", punched and "stomped on" Mr Mackey; the victim died in hospital two days later. Mrs Justice Whitehouse imposed a life sentence with a minimum term of 23 years, calling the killing over a packet of cornflakes. Augustine also received concurrent sentences for theft and robbery.
