Man guilty of Ulez camera explosion
""It was \"remarkable\" the explosion triggered by Rees did not result in people being seriously injured or even killed.""
""He showed a complete disregard for the welfare and safety of the people who live in or were travelling through the area at the time of the explosion, all because he was unhappy with the Ulez scheme," Derham added."
Kevin Rees, 63, was convicted for detonating a homemade improvised explosive device beneath a newly installed ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) camera in Sidcup in December 2023. Counter-terror police arrested him after a metal cylinder filled with explosive powder caused an explosion that damaged vehicles and property up to 100m away, including a child's bedroom. The blast damaged a van, blew out a car tyre, and damaged a wall, front porch, shed and a Wendy house. Forensic tests identified black powder in the device, and officers found aluminium powder, other explosive-related materials and three improvised stun guns at Rees's home. He denied charges and will be sentenced later.
