John Mackey, 87, was attacked and died after being kicked, punched and stamped during a robbery in Manor House on 6 May. Peter Augustine, 59, followed Mackey after he bought cornflakes, a cottage pie and a newspaper at a Co-op and attacked him outside Manor Kebab. Passers-by saw Augustine searching Mackey’s jacket and a member of the public alerted police after hearing "give me the bag" and seeing Mackey inert. Mackey was treated for bleeding on the brain and broken ribs and died two days later. Police found Mackey’s remaining groceries and food wrapping in Augustine’s room. Prosecutors said Augustine used extreme force against a small, vulnerable pensioner; he was found guilty of murder.
