Man fined thousands after failing to take down extension for 15 years
Briefly

Warren Benton, a homeowner, was fined 16,000 for not demolishing an illegal roof extension built on his property, which was in a conservation area. Although he initially obtained planning permission, the extension was found to exceed the height limit and clash with the architectural aesthetics of the neighborhood. The court, led by Judge Colin Burn, emphasized the importance of adhering to planning regulations to maintain the integrity of such areas, warning that ignoring these rules could set a precedent for others.
A home-owner who failed to demolish a 'jarring' illegal roof extension for 15 years has been ordered to pay 16,000 in fines and court costs - and will still have to knock it down.
Bradford Council said the white extension didn't follow the planning permission he was successfully granted in 2009. It was revealed Benton had built it 60cm too high.
Judge Colin Burn said: Images of the property show the extension appears to be somewhat jarring in a row of terraced housing. This is a building in a Conservation Area.
It clearly undermines scheme of planning control not just in this case but opens the door for others to disregard planning regulations.
