Jonathan Hennessy, 42, appeared before Cork District Court charged with the murder of Oleksandr Zhyvytskyi, 31, following an incident on March 16, 2026. Zhyvytskyi suffered a stab wound to the chest during an altercation at Knapp's Square in Cork city at 7.50pm and was pronounced dead at 8.35pm. Hennessy made no reply when charged and was remanded in custody. As murder charges cannot be dealt with in district court, any bail application must be brought before the High Court. Hennessy was granted free legal aid and directed to receive medical assessment while in custody. He is scheduled to appear again by video link on March 25. Zhyvytskyi, originally from Ukraine, was a married father living in Cork city.
