John Ashby, a 32-year-old white British man of no fixed abode, has been charged with rape, sexual assault, intentional strangulation, racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and robbery relating to an attack on a woman who was not known to him. The alleged victim is a woman in her 20s believed to be a Sikh student. West Midlands Police investigated after a report of a distressed woman in the Park Hall area of Walsall. Ashby is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court and there are warnings against sharing information that could prejudice the trial.
