"That's thanks to a quirk of history, as this area was once a very large set of railway sidings, the Herne Hill Sorting Siding, a huge 35-track site used to sort cargo wagons before sending them up to central London. The decline of rail freight led to the closure of the sidings in August 1966, and the area took on its current appearance - a long line of industrial buildings along Milkwood Road."
"Until 2003, the pocket park was mainly a plain lawn with some paths and a small playground area to the south. However, since then, it's been refurbished with around £500,000 spent on the park. A much larger playground was created, along with a sports pitch in the far corner, some raised mounds to climb over and more recently, some of the park is now a mini-allotment."
Milkwood Community Park occupies land formerly home to Nevill's Bakery and wartime-damaged Victorian housing between Loughborough Junction and Herne Hill. The surrounding area developed into long industrial strips along Milkwood Road after the Herne Hill Sorting Siding, a 35-track rail freight yard, closed in August 1966. Nevill's Bakery closed in 1968 following sale to Allied Bakeries, and most of its site was cleared for the park while Heron Academy was built on the northern cleared housing. The pocket park was a plain lawn until around £500,000 of refurbishment after 2003 created a larger playground, a sports pitch, raised mounds, a mini-allotment, and child-focused road markings.
