""every murder is a tragedy," fewer families had been "shattered" by violence."
""It's the product of amazing police work as we attack with ever more precision the most dangerous men who carry weapons, who groom children into gangs, who prey on women,""
London recorded 97 homicides in 2025, a rate of 1.1 per 100,000 people, lower than New York (2.8), Berlin (3.2) and Milan (1.6). The figure is the lowest since 2014 and the lowest on record when adjusted for population. Teenage homicides fell from a 2021 peak of 30 to eight in 2025, the lowest level since 2012. Police attribute the decline to targeted action against organised criminal gangs and greater use of technology including live facial recognition. Prevention work by the Violence Reduction Unit, including youth workers in custody and hospitals and tackling school exclusions, is credited with helping reduce youth involvement in gangs. Political leaders praised the fall while calling for continued action on other crimes, including violence against women and girls. The youngest teenager killed last year was 14-year-old Kelyan Bokassa, fatally stabbed on a bus in Woolwich.
