"The panels here with lichen on them, it makes the station very, very dark indeed,"
"become a fragility risk especially with all the storms that we now have"
"With the concourse roof they are actually glass panels, so where we have got fractures in the glass we are getting leaks which is causing water to get in on the concourse and causing slip hazards. And we can't afford those cracks to get worse and pose a risk to the public,"
Liverpool Street and Waterloo stations will be shut during the Christmas period to allow essential engineering work. Liverpool Street will have cracked 1990s roof panels and Georgian concourse glass panes replaced, and the 1890s drainage system will be renewed; the project has cost Network Rail 23m. Waterloo will close to permit installation of new points at nearby Queenstown Road. There will be no trains between Stratford and Liverpool Street from Christmas Day to New Year's Day. No trains will run to or from Waterloo from Christmas Day until 28 December, with a limited service until 4 January. Safety concerns and storm-related fragility prompted the full concourse closures.
