Listen to Emergency Call with 7-Year-Old Who Saved Her Mom's Life
"When Rhian Haselip woke up feeling under the weather, she didn't think much of it. As a mother of two young children, fatigue and sniffles are part of everyday life. But as the hours passed, her mild discomfort gave way to intense nausea. Haselip remembers leaving her 7-year-old daughter, Jessica, and 3-year-old son, Brody, in front of the television while she ran upstairs to vomit."
"But the little girl didn't panic. In fact, her quick thinking and calm demeanor during a call to 999, the U.K.'s equivalent of 911, helped save her mother's life. Her presence of mind was so remarkable that the East Midlands Ambulance Service shared the audio of Jessica's conversation with the dispatcher on social media. They also recognized her bravery with an award."
"The call lasted 30 minutes. Jessica also had to clear Haselip's airways when she began choking on her own vomit. 'Jessica saved my life,' Haselip says. 'If I had been left there with back-to-back seizures, I would have died.' Hospital scans revealed that she had blood clots in her brain, had suffered mini-strokes and also had a large hole in her heart, for which she is now awaiting surgery."
Rhian Haselip woke with mild symptoms that escalated to intense nausea and a seizure. After vomiting, she fell down stairs, was left unable to move her neck, and lost consciousness. Seven-year-old daughter Jessica called 999, remained calm, and followed dispatcher Sophie Dennett's instructions for 30 minutes, moving hazards, monitoring breathing, and clearing her mother's airway when she choked on vomit. Paramedics were guided by audio the East Midlands Ambulance Service later shared; Jessica received an award for bravery. Hospital scans showed blood clots in Haselip's brain, mini-strokes, and a large hole in her heart; surgery is pending.
