Leaders Must Do All They Can to Bring Alaa Home
Briefly

Alaa Abd El Fattah, a British-Egyptian activist, is still imprisoned despite his sentence ending last September. He has been on a hunger strike for 55 days, facing severe health issues in prison. His mother, Laila Soueif, started a hunger strike to demand his release as well, but her health is also worsening. Both relatives have publicly expressed their desperation for Alaa's freedom, highlighting the lack of progress in negotiations despite UK government involvement and pressures mounting on the Egyptian regime.
As of April 24, Alaa is on Day 55 of a hunger strike that he began on 1 March. He is surviving on a strict ration of herbal tea, black coffee, and rehydration salts, and is now being treated in Wadi El-Natrun prison for severe stomach pains.
Alaa's mother, Laila Soueif, initiated a hunger strike on his intended release date to amplify demands for her son's release. Soueif is also facing deteriorating health as of April 24.
